I got confused with setting the bearing, the first stage didn't need the magnetic qualities of compass, I now understand it more having thought that through.

Thank you to all those who attended. I was asked to provide a list of what we covered:

• maps for different purposes; coverage and physical size
• scale; home printing and preserving scale
• symbols
• correct way of holding
• contour interpretation and limitations of contours
• measuring angles with a compass on the map and on the ground
• I mentioned but we did not cover magnetic variation (deviation).
• measuring distance on the map using the romer, and on the ground by pacing
• We discussed but did not practise timing.
• working out where we were (relocating) at two similar features
• walking on a bearing: how and why, and why not

Hi…. I’m very sorry but unable to make Saturday 14th in Bristol…. Due to work…. Hope all enjoy it.

The weather forecast for Bristol for Saturday is cold and sunny. Because this is a beginners' session, we will be spending the first part of the morning indoors in the café, but when we do go outside, we will not be walking far or vigorously, and there will be a lot of standing around, so please dress very warmly.

Saunterer: Traveline has a solution: A1 bus from the Centre end of Anchor Rod (dep. 0820), then change to X4 bus at Clanage Road (dep. 0840), which takes you to the UWE campus near the meeting point. However, the bus change at Clanage road has only a 1-minute gab between the A1 arriving and the X4 leaving.

Hello. I'm sorry I haven't posted my interest on this page yet, as you requested. The website didn't say I had any messages! On the train Bristol TM is about 30 mins for me and my local station is 5-10 mins walk. Ashton Court could be 1.5 hours drive. It's your prerogative to set the terms that work for you but 9am is not going to be doable for me.

As of 8-40 pm on 15th January, two people have indicated that they will attend, which means we now have the minimum number for it to go ahead. There are four more places available.

I definitely wish I could read a map! Demystify the compass - that too!
Too far for me at the moment, maybe another time.
